NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's tennis team earned a sweeping victory on Wednesday afternnon over the Emmanuel College Lions 9-0 at the Cannon Courts on the campus of Newberry College.
In the doubles competition, Newberry earned a quick point as the No. 3 doubles contest was forfeited by the Lions. At the No. 1 doubles competition Vanessa Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and Amanda Carrillo (Almeria, Spain) defeated Ehbe O'Conner and Abby Frausio 8-1. No. 2 doubles slot also went by way of the Wolves as Rachel Lovaas (Lexington, S.C.) and Rebeca Martinez (Spain) defeated the duo from Emmanuel 8-2.
The singles competition went the way of Newberry in all six matches, beginning at the No. 6 slot as the Lions forfeited that matchup by not fielding a player. In the No. 5 singles match Vernoika Viegas (Sao Lopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil) defeated Wisneski in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 2 matchup Elizabeth Williamson (Canterbury, New Zealand) found victory over Frausio 6-1, 6-0. Tara Lamers (Maastricht, Netherlands) won blemish free over her Emmanuel counterpart, Bradford, 6-0, 6-0.
With the match already won for the Wolves, the No. 4 and No. 1 contests finished at eight points in the first set. McManus defeated Austin 8-0 in the No. 4 ranked singles match, while Ortiz defeated O'Conner 8-3 to conclude the days matches for the women's side.
The Wolves hit the courts again on Saturday afternoon at home against the Mars Hill Lions with a noon start time from the Cannon Courts in Newberry.
