Wolves ready for opener against SCAD-Savannah

NEWBERRY - The Wolves have their season and home opener on friday in what looks to be a promising season.

The Wolves, who are entering their fourth year of competition, were picked to finish third in the SAC for the second straight year. Newberry is coming off a 6-11 season last year and a 4-2 record in SAC play, good for third in the conference. The Wolves season ended in the semifinals of the SAC Championships as they lost to second-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne 16-8.

Junior Noelle Allen was named to the preseason first team all-SAC first team after garnering first team honors at the end of last season. The 5-3 attacker/midfielder from Lawrencevill, Ga. is coming off an excellent sophomore campaign where she played in all 17 games and scored 38 goals to go along with three assists. She also had nine caused turnovers and recorded 18 ground balls as well as 18 draw controls.

On the all-SAC second team is defender Katie Thompson. Thompson is a 5-8 sophomore from Newark, Del. and played in all 17 games for the Wolves last year. She recorded 25 ground balls last season and also caused eight turnovers. 

The game will be the first of two straight on the first of five games in a 15 day span. All in all, the Wolves will play a 17 game schedule. Eight of the 17 games are SAC conference games and 11 of the 17 games will be played within the friendly confines of Setzler Field on Newberry’s campus.

The home slate includes games against Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah, Pfeiffer, Tampa, Edinboro, Tusculum, Saint Leo, UVa-Wise, Young Harris, Lincoln Memorial, Lenoir-Rhyne and Queens.

The game is slated for a 3 p.m. start time and admission is free.
