NEWBERRY – Despite a change of home venue the Newberry College women’s tennis team was able to cruise to an 8-1 victory over the Columbia College Fighting Koalas on Tuesday afternoon at the Newberry High School tennis courts.

The Wolves (3-1) began the afternoon picking up victories in all three of the doubles matches. At the No. 2 doubles contest Tara Lamers (Maastricht, Netherlands) and Elizabeth Williamson (Canterbury, New Zealand) made quick work of Lydia Royals and Ashley Latham, winning 8-0. In the No. 1 doubles match Amanda Carrillo (Almeria, Spain) and Vanessa Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) defeated Erin Green and Mara Reiss 8-1. The final doubles match to finish was the No. 3 matchup where Rachel Lovaas (Lexington, S.C.) and Rebeca Martinez (Spain) defeated Michelle Troup and Sanja Pantelic 8-2.

Newberry continued its winning ways throughout singles completion. The first completed match saw Williamson defeat Latham in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 match. The No. 4 went the way of Newberry’s Kelly McManus (Charleston, S.C.)  as she defeated Royals in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.

The Scarlet and Gray earned the win at the No. 3 slot as Carrillo blew by Reiss in consecutive sets 6-1, 6-0. Ortiz found difficulty at the No. 1 singles matchup but came away with the two set victory 6-2, 7-5. Veronika Viegas (Sao Leopold, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) earned the Wolves’ other sweep in singles action in her victory over Miranda Brown 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 6 singles matchup was Newberry’s lone blemish as Troup defeated Sierra Whaley (Charleston, S.C.) 6-3, 6-1.

The Newberry College women’s tennis team returns to action against Emmanuel on February 12 at 2 p.m. at the Cannon Courts on the campus of Newberry College.
