Women's basketball is on the road in Tennessee for SAC play

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- The Newberry College women's basketball team look to get their third win of the season against Carson Newman on Saturday, December 5.

WOLVES NOTES
- Despite a hard fight the team fell to Francis Marion University 67-61, on Saturday afternoon.

For the game, the Wolves shot 46.7% from the field and 83.3% from the free throw line. Meg Essex led the team in scoring with 19 points followed by Nicola Handreck with 15. Kirsten Dunsmore grabbed nine rebounds with Colleen Leung behind her with six.

- Essex is first in the SAC for total blocks with 10. Handreck is third in the SAC for total assists with 26.

Creed has been named an Honorable Mention Preseason All-American and the Southeast Region Preseason Player of the Year by the Women’s Division II Bulletin. Creed enters her senior season after earning WBCA honorable mention All-American, ECAC All-Star second team and first team all-South Atlantic Conference honors as a junior in 2014-15.

 

WOLVES & EAGLES LAST MEETING
- During the 2014-15 season, The Newberry Wolves women’s basketball team suffered a tough loss at home to Carson-Newman, 53-50.

-Senior forward Haylee Lepaio finished with a double-double as she had 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds on 9-18 shooting from the field. Senior guard Zara Pearson had 14 points as she joined Lepaio as the only other member of the Wolves to reach double figures.

 

 EAGLESS NOTES
- The Lady Eagles return four starters from the 2014-15 team and 12 letter winners while bringing in a trio of newcomers. The three departing seniors from a year ago were known for their defensive prowess.

-Lacy Miller was a reserve point guard that missed the final 11 games of the season with a knee injury. Miller racked up 151 assists and averaged 3.4 points during her career. Jassmine Franklin averaged 4.3 points and 3.1 rebounds a night with 48 blocks in two seasons at Mossy Creek. Finally Whitney Kyle averaged 7.1 points per game as a senior and set the program record by converting 90 percent of her free throw attempts.

-The team placed three players on the South Atlantic Conference’s preseason All-Conference teams. Senior guard Tatum Burstrom was a first-team pick while sophomore forward Jecca Simerly and senior guard Jai Jai McLaughlin were placed on the second team.

 

UP NEXT
The Wolves are on the road on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at Wingate. The game will begin at noon.
