Newberry is back on the road at Mars Hill on Wednesday

MARS HILL, N.C.- The Newberry College women's basketball team looks to tally their third road win of the season against Mars Hill on Wednesday, Dec. 16. The game will begin at 6 p.m.

WOLVES NOTES
- The team is now 3-1 in the South Atlantic Conference after dropping to No. 16 Anderson University 68-61, on Saturday afternoon. Meg Essex finished the game with 23 points, five rebounds and six blocks. Samantha Creed finished with 13 points, two boards and five assists. Emily Perry led the team in steals with three in 28 minutes of play. As a team, the Wolves shot 66.7% from the free throw line and 45.5% from the arch.

Creed was named the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played Nov. 30 – Dec. 6. Creed scored all of her 19 points in the second half in the Wolves’ only game of the week against No. 21 Carson-Newman. Creed collected three defensive rebounds and two steals in 22 minutes of play and was perfect from the three-point line as she made all three of her attempts.

- Essex is first in the SAC for total blocks with 19 and Nicola Handreck is second in the SAC for total assists with 37.

WOLVES & LIONS LAST MEETING
In the 2014-15 season, Newberry defeated Mars Hill 72-63 as they locked up the No. 3 seed in the South Atlantic Conference tournament  on senior day.

- In the game, Creed had a game-high 23 points to go along with four steals and Colleen Leung had 13 points off the bench. 

The Wolves went 30-for-39 including making nine free throws in the last minute of the game. The team shot 50% from the floor despite only going 2-for-8 (25%) from 3-point range.

LIONS NOTES
Mars Hill recently defeated Catawba 82-67 in SAC play. Paige Chavis hit on 8-of-16 shots, including all three of her three-point attempts, and was perfect on seven shots at the line to notch her career high 26 points. Cadence Wilmoth followed with 16 points and handed out six assists. Raven Brown, Ansley Ricker and Genice Lane all scored 10 points with Kelsey Espinosa adding six points and a dozen rebounds.

- The Lions have been picked to finish in eighth place in the South Atlantic Conference preseason poll after finishing 11-17 in 2014-15 season with an eighth place finish in the SAC with a 9-13 league record.

UP NEXT
The Wolves are back at home on Saturday, Dec. 19 to play Lincoln Memorial at 2 p.m.
