WOLVES NOTES
- The team is still 3-0 in the SAC after defeating Wingate University 67-50 this past Tuesday. For the game, Nicola Handreck finished with 16 points, three assists and one steal. Samantha Creed scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds, had two assists and one steal. Kirsten Dunsmore led the team in assists with 6, rebounds with 8, and steals with two.
-Creed has been named the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played Nov. 30 – Dec. 6, announced Monday. Creed scored all of her 19 points in the second half in the Wolves’ only game of the week against No. 21 Carson-Newman. Creed collected three defensive rebounds and two steals in 22 minutes of play and was perfect from the three-point line as she made all three of her attempts.
-Meg Essex is third in the SAC for total blocks with 13 and Handreck is second in the SAC for total assists with 33.
- Creed has been named an Honorable Mention Preseason All-American and the Southeast Region Preseason Player of the Year by the Women’s Division II Bulletin. Creed enters her senior season after earning WBCA honorable mention All-American, ECAC All-Star second team and first team all-South Atlantic Conference honors as a junior in 2014-15.
WOLVES & TROJANS LAST MEETING
-In the 2014-15 season, Newberry defeated Anderson (64- 58) to be named the SAC Champions before falling to them in the NCAA D2 Southeast Region Tournament (69-57).
-In the SAC Championship game, Nicola Handreck had 13 points and three rebounds while Samantha Creed had 11 points. Newberry shot 20-for-53 which was good for 38% and went 19-for-25 from the free throw line.
-In the NCAA Tournament game, the Wolves were led by Creed who had 17 points and four rebounds before leaving the game with an injury halfway through the second period. The loss wrapped up one of the most successful seasons in Newberry history was only the fifth-ever appearance for the Wolves in the NCAA Tournament and the second time under head coach Sean Page.
TROJANS NOTES
- For the season so far, the Trojans are 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. Anderson enters Saturday’s game having won its last 21 regular-season games and its last 19 regular-season games against SAC opponents. Head coach Jimmy Garritty is 4-2 against Newberry in his two full seasons, picking up his first NCAA Tournament win over the Wolves last season.
-In October, Jasmine Franklin and Alexis Dillard were named to the Preseason All-SAC teams, as Franklin claimed a spot on the first team, while Dillard landed on the second team. Anderson was picked to defend its conference championship, being picked first in the annual Preseason SAC Coaches’ Poll.
-Anderson leads the SAC in points per game allows (52.6) and opponents’ field-goal percentage (32.9). For the season so far, Madison Floyd has scored 66 points, has dished 12 assists and has made 10 steals. Dillard and Jennifer Monroe have both grabbed 37 rebounds each while Dillard leads in steals too with eight.
