Wolves look to defeat Francis Marion on Saturday

FLORENCE- The Wolves look to give the Patriots of Francis Marion University their first loss of the season on Saturday, Nov. 28.

WOLVES NOTES
- Newberry defeated Queens University of Charlotte 76-49 on Tuesday, Nov. 24 in SAC play. For the game, Samantha Creed scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds, and had one block and one steal. Meg Essex and Nicola Handreck both scored 12 points each. The team shot 75% from the free throw line and 61.5% from the arch.

- Creed is second in the SAC for assists per game with 4.3. Essex is first in the SAC for total blocks with nine.

- The Wolves returned three starters including first team all-SAC honoree Creed, SAC all-freshman team member Handreck and Jaya Schultz.

Creed has been named an Honorable Mention Preseason All-American and the Southeast Region Preseason Player of the Year by the Women’s Division II Bulletin. Creed enters her senior season after earning WBCA honorable mention All-American, ECAC All-Star second team and first team all-South Atlantic Conference honors as a junior in 2014-15.

 

WOLVES & PATRIOTS LAST MEETING
- During the 2014-15 season, Newberry was able to snap a three game losing skid as they knocked off Francis Marion 56-40.

-The Wolves were led by senior forward Haylee Lepaio who had her third double-double of the season as she posted 18 points and 13 rebounds. She also recorded a block that moved her into second place all-time on the career blocks list with 116.

-Creed had 14 points and eight rebounds.

 

PATRIOTS NOTES
-The Patriots are undefeated in the Peach Belt Conference (5-0) going into this game. Francis Marion has defeated Erskine, North Greenville, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Pfeiffer, and Fayetteville St.

-The returning starters include senior 5-6 guard Camille Dash (6.3 ppg, 2.9 apg), senior 5-11 forward Alaysia Watts (6.2 ppg, 5.9 rpg), sophomore 5-10 guard Khayani Chandler (10.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg), and sophomore 5-8 forward Briana Burgins (7.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg). Also back is sophomore 6-0 forward Courtney Wood (4.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg), who appeared in 25 contests and did make five starts as a freshman.

-The freshmen class consists of four Palmetto State products: 5-9 forward Lauryn Bush, 5-8 guard Brooke Dixon, 5-10 forward Shaunice Fulmore, and 6-2 center Kacey Medlin.

The Wolves are on the road on Saturday, Dec. 5 at Carson-Newman. The game will begin at 2 p.m.
