Women's basketball hosts Queens for SAC play on Tuesday

NEWBERRY- The Wolves host the Royals of Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday, November, 24. The game will be the home opener and first SAC game for the women’s basketball team.

WOLVES NOTES
- The Wolves fell to Armstrong State University 68-55 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play. For the game, Samantha Creed led the team in scoring with 19 and in steals with two. Meg Essex finished the game with 16 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Nicola Handreck scored 10 points, grabbed six rebounds, and had four assists.

- The Wolves returned three starters including first team all-SAC honoree Creed, SAC all-freshman team member Handreck and Jaya Schultz.

Creed has been named an Honorable Mention Preseason All-American and the Southeast Region Preseason Player of the Year by the Women’s Division II Bulletin. Creed enters her senior season after earning WBCA honorable mention All-American, ECAC All-Star second team and first team all-South Atlantic Conference honors as a junior in 2014-15.

WOLVES & ROYALS LAST MEETING
-During the 2014-15 season, the Wolves beat Queens University of Charlotte on Feb. 18, 53-49.

-Creed had 15 points and five assists in the win. Schultz also scored 12 points to go along with six rebounds. They were the only two Wolves to score in double figures marking only the second time they have been able to win a South Atlantic Conference game under those circumstances.

-Newberry shot 41.8% from the field during the game and 30.8% from 3-point range. The Wolves only managed to get to the free throw line six times, going 3-for-6.

 

ROYALS NOTES
-The Royals of Queens University of Charlotte were picked 12th in the South Atlantic Conference Pre-Season Poll that was released by the leagues office.

-McKell Oliverio will enter this season as the Royals top scorer after totaling 230 points last year. Oliverio had 94 field goals over the course of the season in addition to 15 three-point baskets.

-Out of the ten currently active players only three are seniors with both Nikki Gleason and Karleasha Thompson serving in just their third semester here. Erin Brundage is the third senior on the team and will be a strong advantage to the roster after missing the first half the season last year.

-For the 2015-16 season so far, Queens has defeated Barton College 75-62 and Johnson and Wales University 71-33, and dropped to University of Mount Olive 78-47 and University of South Carolina-Aiken 64-59.

The Wolves are back on the road on Saturday, November 28 at Francis Marion. The game will begin at 2 p.m.
