Wolves look to get second win at Armstrong State this Saturday

SAVANNAH, GA- The Wolves are on the road once again for a non-conference game at Armstrong State on Saturday, Nov. 21 for a 3 p.m. tipoff.

WOLVES NOTES
-Newberry dropped to Claflin University 65-64 in a heartbreaker on Wednesday night in Orangeburg, S.C. For the game, Meg Essex had 22 points, Nicola Handreck had 13, Samantha Creed had 12 and Samara Hill had 10. Handreck dished seven assists while Creed dished six assists.

- Essex is in third in the South Atlantic Conference for points scored per game with 20.3.  For the season so far Essex has scored 61 points. Essex also averages 8.7 rebounds per game.

- Handreck leads the team in assists will 11. Handreck averages 12.3 points per game and 3.7 assists per game.

- The Wolves returned three starters including first team all-SAC honoree Creed, SAC all-freshman team member Handreck and  Jaya Schultz.

Creed has been named an Honorable Mention Preseason All-American and the Southeast Region Preseason Player of the Year by the Women’s Division II Bulletin. Creed enters her senior season after earning WBCA honorable mention All-American, ECAC All-Star second team and first team all-South Atlantic Conference honors as a junior in 2014-15.

 

PIRATES NOTES
-The Pirates has been picked to finish fourth in the Peach Belt Conference for 2015-16, according to the league’s preseason coaches’ poll, released in October.

-Armstrong State returns three starters and six players overall from last season’s squad that finished 13-14 overall but 11-8 in the Peach Belt Conference. First-team All-PBC selection Brigitta Barta (17.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg) leads the returnees, along with seniors Shermika Harris (15.2 ppg) and Alexia Somerset (8.9 ppg, 7.7 rpg).

-Barta was named to the Peach Belt’s Preseason Women’s Basketball All-Conference Team.

-The Pirates have defeated their past four opponents so far for the 2015-16 season. They include: Lynn (69-64), Palm Beach Atlanta (66-64), Middle Georgia (72-53), and Coastal Georgia (82-61).

 

UP NEXT
The home schedule begins with the South Atlantic Conference opener against Queens on Tuesday, November 24. The game will begin at 6 p.m.
