NEWS AND NOTES

• After finishing the regular season on a four-game winning streak, the Newberry Wolves burst into the NCAA Division II Playoffs as Super Region II’s seventh seed.
• This is game number 1,002 for the scarlet and gray in season No. 102. Newberry has a 416-549-36 record.
• This marks Newberry’s second trip to the NCAA postseason in the last three years, rebounding from a three-game October losing streak with a four-game winning streak to close the regular season.
• The Wolves bring a stout defense to Braly Municipal Stadium, led by linebacker Taylor McDonnell, who was named South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday.
• McDonnell finished the season ranked second in the league in solo tackles. At Wingate, he had nine tackles - all solos - with three tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.
• Newberry travels to a Gulf South school for the second time this season after the win at Florida Tech to start the season. That win over FIT was likely one of the deciding factors in Newberry’s playoff invitation.
• Florida Tech is the only mutual opponent on the two teams’ schedules. Newberry won on the road by a 31-28 count, with UNA edging the Panthers 55-48 in Florence.
• UNA is ranked 14th in the AFCA Coaches’ Poll and 9th in the D2Football.com poll, marking the first nationally ranked team the Wolves have seen this season.
• The winner of this game will advance to take on the Catawba/Tuskegee winner next weekend in the regional semifinals.
• The South Atlantic Conference and Gulf South Conference each earned three bids to this year’s NCAA Championships, with the SIAC earning one.
• Only two other conferences earned three playoff bids this season: the Great Lakes Intercollegiate (GLIAC) with Ashland, Ferris State and Grand Valley State - and the Northern Sun (NSIC) with Augustana, Minnesota State and Sioux Falls.
• The Gulf South has had at least one team advance to the regional final every year since 1999.

HOT HANDS

• Newberry scored over 40 points in three consecutive games for only the third time in program history.
• The 2015 run was the first of those three streaks which resulted in a 3-0 record in those games.

NO SOUP FOR YOU!

• Newberry has been strong on defense all year, and now ranks seventh nationally in Division II in scoring defense per game.
• In the last four games - all Newberry wins - the Wolves have allowed only 28 points. This is an average of 7.0 points per game.

TOUGH SLEDDING

• The Wolves’ defense has allowed only 28 points in the four-game winning streak, largely because opponents have been limited in total yards.
• Newberry has held four opponents under 250 total yards this season.

YOU SHALL NOT PASS

• Newberry ranks 13th nationally in passing yardage allowed.
• The Wolves have allowed under 100 yards passing six of 11 games.

THE LEG

• Newberry College senior punter Kyle Clark ranks ninth amongst all current Division II punters in career punting average.
• With a minimum of 100 punts, Clark is the active current leader for all South Carolina punters
• For the season, Clark averages 42.6 yards per punt, which ranks 10th in Division II.
• This leads the South Atlantic Conference for the third consecutive season.
• Clark was also named the AstroTurf/South Atlantic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week on September 28 after averaging 45.8 yards per punt in the win over Tusculum.
• Clark has also been excellent in changing the field position of the game throughout his entire career.
• His 63 punts inside the opponents’ 20-yardline is third most in Division II over the last three seasons.

THE SOUTH’S LONGEST-RUNNING BROADCAST

• Newberry College is extremely pleased to have one of the longest running media affiliations in the nation with hometown broadcaster WKDK-AM 1240.
• WKDK has broadcast the scarlet and gray since the station’s inception in October 1946, marking the 69th year of Newberry football on the airwaves
• Play-by-play man Jimmie Coggins is a 1974 graduate of Newberry College and is in his 33rd season of broadcasting the scarlet and gray
• Coggins is the longest tenured active broadcaster in the South Atlantic Conference, with 16 years more experience than his nearest competition (Brian Stayton, Tusculum, 17th season).
• Coggins was inducted into the Newberry College Athletic Hall of Fame in August 2013.

THE DOCTOR IS IN

• Romelo Doctor has had a fantastic season rushing the football, becoming the 11th player in Newberry College history to go over 1,000 yards rushing in a single season and first since 2007.
• ”Doc” needs 132 yards to earn the school’s single season rushing yardage record.

• He has also reached the top 10 in career yardage at Newberry and will look to climb this chart for the rest of his career. He moved up two spots to eighth in this category with his performance against Limestone.

• He has seven 100-yard rushing games this season, which gives him 10 for his career.

• On top of that, Doctor has become the fourth Newberry back (fifth overall time) to rush for 100 or more yards in four consecutive games.
• Doctor is also the leading rusher by total yardage of all collegiate players in South Carolina.

KEEPING IT ONE HUNDO

• The Newberry rushing attack has been fantastic this season, producing 12 100-yard individual rushing games in 11 regular season games.
• This establishes a new school record for 100-yard games, breaking the record of nine, which was set in 1970.

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND

• Newberry quarterback Zach Blair was sacked and fumbled the ball in the fourth quarter vs. Brevard.
• The play was not over though, as reserve offensive guard Austin Turner picked up the ball and advanced it eight yards.
• By rule, Turner is given credit for the eight yards rushing, but Blair is given the initial carry.
• This gives Turner zero carries for eight yards.
• As professors in Newberry’s mathematics department will tell you, you cannot divide an integer by zero.
• This gives Turner an inifinite yards per carry average.

COOKING IT UP

• Newberry wide receiver Jalen Cook was on the receiving end of a pair of Yeldell touchdowns.
• He totaled 105 receiving yards on six catches.
• This marked Newberry’s first 100-yard receiving game since Corey Washington and Jason Livingston in the 2013 Brevard game.
• This was also another first, as the Wolves had a quarterback pass for 250 yards, a back rush for 100 yards and a receiver have 100 receiving yards for the first time since Josh Stepp, Alex Haynes and Tymere Zimmerman did so in the 2006 game against Carson-Newman.

POSTSEASON SUCCESS

• Newberry is now tied for the third-most NCAA postseason appearances amongst current teams in the South Atlantic Conference.

DOVER & SOBOCINSKI NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT

• Newberry College football players Corey Dover and Evan Sobocinski have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 team, as announced by CoSIDA.
• Dover, a senior from York, is the campus vice president of Phi Mu Epsilon honorary mathematics society, is a math tutor for campus has been named to the Dean’s List in every semester eligible, is a two-time South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll member and has been named to D2ADA Academic Achievement Award. He also works with children’s ministry at Shandon Baptist Church in Columbia.
• He has a 3.68 grade point average with a major in mathematics and minor in business administration. He has 29 tackles this season with a tackle for loss and five pass breakups. This is first CoSIDA Academic All-District honor.
• Sobocinski, a May graduate from Lexington, has been a consistent starter on the offensive line and earns CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for the third time. He graduated with a 3.75 grade point average with double majors in business administration and accounting. He graduated from the Summerland Honors program, is a member Phi Beta Lambda (Future Business Leaders of America), has been on the Dean’s List in every semester eligible, two-time honoree on the D2ADA Academic Achievement Award list and three-time honoree on the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll list.

YELDELL’S SUPER SEASON

• Newberry quarterback Raleigh Yeldell had one of the nation’s most prolific days for a quarterback in Division II in the win over Brevard.
• For his efforts in the game, Yeldell earned ECAC Division II Offensive Player of the Week honors.
• Yeldell completed 24-of-28 passes for 279 yards and five touchdowns with a quarterback rating of 228.3.
• He finished the game with 16 consecutive completions
• His 5 touchdown passes ties him with Josh Stepp for the third-most in a single game in Newberry history.
• His 85.7% completion percentage is the third best in a single game by a Division II quarterback this season and his 5 TD passes is tied for 10th most nationally this season.
• His 279 yards is a career best and his second consecutive game over 250 passing yards.
• Yeldell earned South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors after the 52-14 win at L-R.
• He was masterful in the Wolves’ 52-14 rout of rival Lenoir-Rhyne. He completed 18-of-25 passes (72%) for 265 yards and four touchdowns with one interception.
• It was his third straight game with over 250 yards passing. He also picked up 57 yards rushing and a reception for 27 yards as Newberry rolled to victory.
• Yeldell was fantastic again against Limestone, completing 17-of-25 passes for 238 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.
• The junior now has 12 touchdown passes in his last four games.
• Yeldell’s late season surge has put him towards the top of the Newberry single season record book in terms of touchdown completions.

SCARLET AND GRAY IN YELLOWHAMMER STATE

• Newberry is making its 14th appearance in Alabama with this trip to the NCAA playoffs.
• The scarlet and gray are 2-10-1 in Alabama.
• This is Newberry’s first trip to both Alabama and the Central Time Zone since a narrow loss at Division I-FCS Samford in 2010.

ON NOVEMBER 21 IN NEWBERRY FOOTBALL HISTORY (1-3)

• 1936 - Newberry is tripped up at Erskine, 12-6.
• 1940 - The Indians wrap up an impressive Little Four Championship with a 46-6 win at Wofford. Newberry rolled up 378 yards of rushing on the legs of Dom Colangelo, Charlie Power and Woody Lucas.
• 1942 - Newberry is beaten at Chattanooga, 33-7.
• 1957 - Catawba invades Setzler and defeats Newberry, 20-7. Quarterback Scotty Speares scored Newberry’s touchdown.
