Wolves swept by Bulldogs

NEWBERRY- Wingate University (15-2, 9-1 SAC) swept Newberry College (6-9, 2-8 SAC) in three sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-17) at the Eleazer Arena on Saturday evening in a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) battle.

Game Summary

Junior outside hitter Logan Hayward led the way for the Wolves with 12 kills on the night while senior captain Rachel Moran tallied 15 assists and eight digs. Freshman setter Maggie Marsh added 14 assists while freshmen libero Kensley Jordan tallied 12 digs and a service ace.  

Outside hitter Abby Saehler notched a double-double on the night with 13 kills and 12 digs while adding two block assists. Shelly Stumpff added to Saehler’s night with 11 kills, eight digs and two service aces of her own. Iris Brewer added to her season total with 30 assists and 12 digs.

FIRST SET

The first set started with the Bulldogs jumping out to a 3-0 lead until a kill by Hayward got the Wolves on the board. The Wolves would tie the game four all with a bad set by Wingate’s Brewer. Shelly Stumff and Abby Saehler would take over the game from there and get back to back points for the Bulldogs and jump out to a 7-5 lead.

The match would go back and forth from there but the Wolves would regain the lead. With the score 18-10, Hayward would get a big kill to start the Wolves on a short run. The Wolves would go on another run later on in the set with a kill by Madison Darby-McClure. Newberry would pull within four with a score of 24-21 but a kill by Anna Holmquist would put Wingate on top 1-0 after the first set.

SECOND SET

The second set started out almost the exact same way. Wingate opened up with a 6-4 lead. A kill by Alexus Horton would tie the set at 7-7 and a kill by Mary Siebert tied the set up again at 8-8. With the score at 15-13 the Bulldogs would go on a five point run to push the score to 20-13. Newberry tried to make a comeback with back to back kills from Hayward but would fall short as the Bulldogs won the second set 25-18.

THIRD SET

The third set started with the Bulldogs jumping out to a 9-3 lead. The Wolves would start to make a comeback with back to back kills from Hayward again to make the score 14-10. Wingate would score three points in a row when Mary Siebert added a kill of her own and tallied a service ace on the next play to make the score 17-13. The Wolves would only score four more points in the set as Wingate would win the set 15-17

Teams

As a team, the Wolves tallied 33 kills on 116 attempts. Newberry added 32 assists, four service aces and 46 digs in the losing effort. Newberry also tallied five blocks on the evening. Wingate tallied 41 kills on 103 attempts while adding 38 assists. The Bulldogs added five service aces, 54 digs and eight total blocks.

Up Next for the Wolves

The Wolves will host the Coker College Cobras Saturday (1:00pm) on Home Coming Weekend at Newberry College.
