Box Score NEWBERRY – Newberry College (8-12, 4-10 SAC) snapped their three game slide with a sweep against Tusculum College (9-11, 6-8 SAC) in a South Atlantic Conference, (SAC) show down in Newberry South Carolina tonight.
GAME SUMMARY
The Wolves were led my junior outside hitter Logan Hayward as she had a double-double with 15 kills and 16 digs. Hayward tallied a .419 hitting percentage and a block in the winning effort. Mary Siebert added nine kills and seven digs while teammate Alexis Bryant notched eight kills and one block assists. Senior captain Rachel Moran tallied 21 assists and eight digs. Freshman libero Kensley Jordan added 19 digs.
FIRST SET
The first set started with the Pioneers jumping out to an early lead (6-3) but a big kill from Logan Hayward started a Wolves come back. Newberry would battle back to tie the game at 10 and then go on to take a 11-13 lead. The Pioneers would take a 13-12 lead with an attack error by Bryant but the Wolves would come right back to score three unanswered points to take a 16-13 lead.
The set was tied at 22 when a kill by Sarah Bouley and an attack error by the Wolves gave the Pioneers a 24-22 lead and set point. Back to back kills by Siebert and Hayward tied the match again at 24. An attack error by the Wolves gave the Pioneers the one point lead. The Wolves got a kill from Hayward and two attack errors by the Pioneers to give the Wolves the win in the first set.
SECOND SET
The second set started out with the Pioneers jumping out to a 8-4 lead. Newberry would battle back and a kill by Mary Siebert would tie the match up at nine. Newberry would go on to take a 13-12 lead but the Pioneers would tie it up at 13. Newberry went on to take a 20-16 lead with a couple kills by Hayward. The Wolves would continue their run and win the set 25-19.
THIRD SET
The third set was going back and forth in the early stages. Neither team gaining an edge. The score was at 11-10, Newberry leading when the Wolves went on to score five unanaswered points to stretch their lead to 16-10. A kill by Alexus Horton and Logan Hayward gave the Wolves a 18-12 lead.
Newberry never looked back as they scored seven points to the Pioneers one point to take the third set 25-13 and win the match 3-0.
TEAM
Newberry College would tally 41 kills on the night while adding 37 assists. Kensley Jordan led the way for the Wolves with 19 digs.
