Box Score NEWBERRY- Newberry College (7-9, 3-7 SAC) beat Coker College (4-12, 1-10 SAC) on Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) match 3-1.
Game Summary
Freshman hitter Samantha De Jong led the team in kills with 15 on 25 attempts giving her a .480 hitting percentage while notching five digs and four block assists. Junior outside hitter Logan Hayward tallied 12 kills on the afternoon while senior Captain Alexus Horton tallied a .522 hitting percentage with 14 kills on 23 attempts. The other captain, Rachel Moran noticed a double-double for the Wolves with 33 assists and 12 digs while freshman setter Maggie Marsh added a double-double of her own with 17 assists and 12 digs.
For Coker College, Alexis Berles had nine kills on 23 attempts giving her team leading .304 hitting percentage and added seven block assists. Teammate Christen Bragg notched a double-double with 33 assists and 10 digs while adding two block assists. Megan Hardy tallied seven kills and five block assists.
FIRST SET
The Wolves jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead to open up the match with a couple kills from Hayward but Alexis Berles would get a few kills of her own to tie the set up at four. There on out the first set went back and forth with neither team gaining much of a lead.
With the score at 15-11 with the Wolves leading, Madison Darby-McClure grabbed a kill of her own which would start a run for the Wolves. The Wolves would score 10 points while the Cobras would score just three to make the final score 25-15.
SECOND SET
The second set was a see-saw set with neither team gaining an edge. It opened with the Wolves offense staying strong and jumping out to a 2-0 lead but Alexis Berles kept her team in the game with a kill of her own. Back to back service aces would put the Cobras up 3-2.
With the score tied at 15, Lauren Underwood added a kill of her own to start a short run for the Wolves. Newberry would score six unanswered points to take a 17-15 lead when Christen Bragg notched a kill to stop the run.
Late in the second set, the Wolves were leading 24-22 when Megan Hard, Cayley Gunter and Tonie Hammer each scored four unanswered points to take the second set 26-25.
THIRD SET
The Wolves offense would stay hot in the third set as Samantha De Jong notched six kills in the set while teammates Lauren Underwood and Logan Hayward each added three kills for the set. The Wolves would jump out quick to a 23-15 lead but Coker College would battle back to score four unanswered points to make the score 23-19. Alexus Horton put a stop to the Cobras run with a kill of her own which put Newberry at set point. Underwood finished it off with a kill to give the Wolves the win (25-19) and leading in the match 2-1.
Fourth Set
The set was tied at 4-4 when Coker’s Toni Hammer put the hammer down with a big kill to take the early lead at 5-4 which started a run for the Cobras. The Wolves would battle back to tie the set up at 14 all.
Coker was holding to a two point lead for most of the rest of the match and till the Cobras had set point. Newberry was down 24-21 when senior captain Alexus Horton grabbed a kill of her own and a service ace to cut the score to 24-23. Samantha De Jong would score two of the final three points for the Wolves which gave the Wolves the 26-24 win. The Wolves took the match 3-1.
Teams
Newberry College had 63 kills on 174 attempts to give the team a .218 hitting percentage. The Wolves had 59 assists, six service aces and 87 digs while adding 13 block assists giving the team a total of 8.5 blocks on the day.
