Box Score HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Newberry College women’s soccer team defeated Lincoln Memorial, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolves started off strong offensively with a shot from Elizabeth Gutierrez just 55 seconds into the game. Michelle Calmeyn followed with a shot five minutes in but it was saved by Lincoln Memorial’s goalie.
The Wolves took five more shots before it finally went in for a Newberry goal. Valeria Newcomb put the Wolves on the board first at the 29:07 mark by finding the upper corner of the goal off her own long kick. Newberry held the, 1-0, led for the rest of the half.
At the 58:27 mark, Gutierrez increased Newberry’s lead to, 2-0, by finding the back of the net off a deflection. Lincoln Memorial answered back 78 minutes into the game with a goal by Olivia Thompson.
With nine minutes left Lindsay Huber took the last shot for the Wolves but it was wide right. Newberry held the lead (2-1) for the rest of the game taking the win.
For the game, Newberry took 17 shots with nine on goal. Rebecca Darley made six saves for the Wolves in goal.
Newberry hosts USC Aiken on Wednesday, October 14 for 3:30 p.m. play.
