FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A pair of overtime losses proved to be the difference in the No. 14 Newberry Wolves’ loss to No. 6 McKendree, as the Bearcats won 19-14 in the opening round of the 2015 NWCA National Duals.

Newberry falls to 6-2 on the season and will wrestle No. 5 Mercyhurst at 1 p.m.

Trung Duong (Lynchburg, Va.) started the duals weekend off in a great bout for the Wolves, winning in a 9-1 major decision at 125 lbs. After McKendree took a 6-1 decision at 133 lbs. and a 17-7 major decision at 141 lbs., Seiji Borja (North Charleston, S.C.) picked up a 9-2 decision at 149 lbs. to tie the dual at 7 team points apiece after four bouts.

A pair of tight decisions swung the momentum back to the Bearcats, as No. 2 Nick Haferkamp avoided Lukas Gilmore’s (Greenville, Mich.) upset bid at 165 lbs. by taking down Gilmore in sudden victory. After six bouts, McKendree led 13-7.

Joe Pittman (Forsyth, Ga.) avenged a loss to Luis Alba from the Midwest Classic at 174 lbs. Alba pinned Pittman in Indianapolis, but Pittman earned a 12-1 major decision in Fort Wayne.

Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) was edged in overtime at 184 lbs., but Huston Evans (Springfield, Ohio) earned a great win at 197 lbs., upsetting No. 2 Julian Smith 3-2, setting up a showdown at heavyweight. Cody Brundage (Chapin, S.C.) earned an early takedown and led, but was edged 7-3, handing the Bearcats the opening session win.
