CLEMSON - The Newberry College women's tennis team earned their first victory on the 2015 campaign on Friday afternoon against the Southern Wesleyan Warriors 9-0 at Nettles Park.
In the No. 1 singles match, Elizabeth Williamson defeated Samantha Powell in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. At the No. 2 position Newberry's Tara Lamers defeated Elizabeth Mulkey in consecutive sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Rebeca Martinez earned the victory at the No. 3 slot as she defeated Abbey Coker in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Sierra Whaley won in the final singles match for Newberry as she defeated Kaycee Blackwell 6-3, 6-2. Matches at No. 5 and No. 6 went by way of default.
The Wolves earned solid victories in doubles competition as well. In the No. 1 position Amanda Carrillo and Lamers defeated Powell and Mulkey 8-2. At the No. 2 slot Veronika Viegas and Whaley earned the 8-2 victory against Coker and Blackwell.
The Newberry College women's tennis team is back in action at Benedict on Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m. in Columbia.
