Box Score SALISBURY, N.C. – The Newberry Wolves women’s soccer team went on the road and downed the No. 10 team in the country in dominating fashion as they beat Catawba 3-0 on Saturday evening.
The Wolves got a pair of goals from senior Sabrina Serafin (Northridge, Calif.) and one from senior Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand). The Wolves again had another incredible defensive effort as they allowed only three shots total with one shot on goal.
Newberry has not allowed more than a shot on goal in each of their last two games and junior goalkeeper Alexis Carillo (La Puente, Calif.) and the rest of the Wolves defense posted their fourth shutout on the year.
Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.) and Brodie both posted a team high four shots while senior Breanna Naranjo (Oxnard, Calif.) posted three and Serafin had two.
The win lifted Newberry to 5-1-1, 3-1 and Catawba dropped to 6-2, 2-2. Newberry is now tied for first in the South Atlantic Conference standings with Lincoln Memorial, Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne. It keeps the Wolves undefeated on the road this season with their fourth road victory.
Serafin opened the scoring pretty early just 11:49 into the contest as she beat Indians goalkeeper Angelica Pawloski.
Newberry struck again right before halftime when Brodie had a beautiful chip shot over Pawloski for her second goal of the season with just a shade over five minutes left to push the lead to 2-0.
The Wolves enjoyed possession through the contest and posted nine of their 13 total shots in the second half as they tried to put the game out of reach. They finally got their breakthrough when Brodie played in a ball that the goalkeeper couldn’t handle and Serafin was there to tap it into the back of the net.
Newberry returns to action on Saturday Oct. 4th for another SAC road contest at Queens for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
