Warren tallies two in victory over Mercy

Box Score

NEWBERRY - Sophomore Caitlyn Warren scored two goals today as Newberry College field hockey earned its third victory on the season with a 4-2 win over Mercy College on Friday afternoon at historic Setzler Field.

The Wolves started off quickly just 3:04 into the match as Kaitlyn Willard found Warren with a pass directly from a penalty corner, which she stopped and then lifted over the goalie and into the back of the cage.

At the 6:46 mark of the first half, the Willard and Warren duo struck again in very similar fashion. Off of a Willard penalty corner, Warren corralled the pass and blasted a shot past goalkeeper Olivia Kelly to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead.

Mercy struck back with eight minutes left in the first period as Geraldine Grandprez found herself with the ball at her feet from seven meters away after a scramble in front, an opportunity which she buried past Newberry goalie Mary Greco.

Four minutes into the second half, freshman Alison King found the back of the cage to put the Wolves up 3-1, her second of the season. Willard tallied her first goal of the match and seventh of the season as she buried a penalty stroke past Kelly to give the Wolves a 4-1 advantage mid-way through the second half.

Mercy added its second goal with four minutes left in the match to bring the score to 4-2 in favor the Wolves.

Newberry returns home tomorrow at 11 a.m. as they host Mercyhurst from Setzler Field.
