NEWBERRY – Redshirt senior defender Stephen Harvey (Kingston, Jamaica) put home the game-winning goal in the first overtime period to lift Newberry (2-2-0) past North Greenville (0-4-0) 1-0 in a thriller.

The Wolves dominated the game from the midway point in the first half and had a staunch defensive effort that saw North Greenville fail to muster a single shot on goal during the entire 97-plus minute contest.

With 2:48 remaining in the first golden goal overtime period, Newberry had pressured North Greenville back into their own box. The Wolves forced the Crusaders into turning the ball over and freshman Davis Bryan (Dacula, Ga.) left the ball for Harvey who slotted the ball into the back of the net at the far left post. The goal is Harvey’s second on the season.

Overall, Newberry had a great offensive effort as they outshot the Crusaders 24-6 over the course of the game, including a 6-0 edge in shots on goal. Newberry dominated possession in both halves and forced the Crusaders to spend most of the game defending on their side of the field but neither team came up with a goal during regulation.

Sophomore forward Dillion Pelton (Pomaria, S.C.) led the way as he recorded four shots with three of them coming on target. Davis and fellow freshman Sterling Wendt (Alpharetta, Ga.) also posted four shots each.

Anchored by Harvey, sophomore Michael McPeak (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and in conjunction with freshmen Billy Decker (Eagle River, Alaska) and Paul Marie (France) the back line held firm. Senior goalkeeper Nick Lucido (Lakeland, Fla.) didn’t have to face a single shot aimed between the posts and recorded zero saves. Lucido was forced to make 14 saves to preserve a 2-1 win at Mars Hill on Friday but today the Wolves back line easily held off pressure all day on their way to the first shutout of the season.

The Wolves reeled off back-to-back wins for the first time since September 2011 in which they beat Pfieffer and USC Aiken in two straight shutouts.

Newberry returns to action on Family Weekend this Saturday for a 1 p.m. match against Lincoln Memorial.
