Wolves edge Saints in tight 5-3 victory

NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's tennis team took advantage of a pair of doubles victories as the Wolves topped the visiting Limestone Saints 5-3 at the Cannon Tennis Courts on Wednesday afternoon.

Newberry (14-7) opened the match by defeating the Saints (8-8) at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The Wolves' senior pair of Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) knocked off Alexandra Boulbin and Hannah Hopkins 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.

Senior Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and sophomore Vanessa Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) picked up an 8-3 win over Marian Pinate and Jessica Martinez at No. 2.

Singles play saw the Saints win the first two matches at No. 1 and No. 3, before Ziehe toppled Martinez in straight sets. Newberry senior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) regained the team lead for the Wolves with a win at No. 5 over Hopkins in three sets.

The match was clinched at No. 2 as Adum defeated Pinate in three sets. At the conclusion of Adum's victory the No. 4 singles match was left unfinished. At No. 4 singles, Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) came from a set down to force a third set, which the Wolves' Dutch sophomore led 3-0 before the match was abandoned.

Newberry wraps up the regular season on Sunday at 2 p.m. with a home match against King.
