Wolves score school record 22 goals in win over Bulldogs

NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's lacrosse team, led by a combined 11 goals from sophomore Noelle Allen and senior Kerri Ann Barlage, scored a school-record 22 goals in a 22-10 victory over the visiting Wingate Bulldogs at Setzler Field on Saturday.

The Wolves (5-10, 3-2 SAC) started the scoring against the Bulldogs (2-5, 1-5 SAC) about a little over two minutes into the game as Barlage (Glen Burnie, Md.) scored the games' first goal. A second goal was soon scored by the Wolves as sophomore Carly Marksberry (Lawrenceville, Ga.) assisted on a goal by junior Tessa Davis (Triangle, Va.). Sophomore Jessica Baxtrom (St. Leonard, Md.) wrapped up the Wolves three goals in ten minutes start as she scored the third goal of the first period.

Wingate netted back-to-back goals before Allen (Lawrenceville, Ga.) scored her first of the game. Allen stayed in the action on the Wolves' fifth goal as she assisted on a tally from junior Victoria Thomas (Manhattan, Kan.). Allen netted a free position goal with 13:28 on the clock, before Barlage scored her second to give the Wolves a 7-2 lead.

Baxtrom's second free position make, was followed by an unassisted goal from senior Kayla Hopper (Newberry, S.C.). The Wolves 9-2 lead after Hoppers goal, soon turned to a 9-5 advantage as the Bulldogs tallied three straight.

Barlage scored with 5:41 left in the first half as Allen followed with the eventual game winner 30 seconds later.

Barlage's goal with 5:41 remaining in the first period, kicked off eight-straight goals for the Wolves, before Wingate scored with 20:07 left in the second half.

Allen led the Wolves with six goals, while Barlage added five. Barlage's five goals give her 45 on the season, which ties her total from last season for the most in a season at Newberry. Baxtrom added three goals, while redshirt-freshman Ajahna Grosvenor and Thomas were the Wolves' other multi-goal scorers with two each.

Barlage added two assists to her stat line and was joined by Baxtrom, Marksberry and freshman Olivia Knight (Spartanburg, S.C.) with a pair of assists.

Freshman Katie Thompson (Newark, Del.) and Thomas led the Wolves with three ground balls, while Thomas and Barlage each recorded three caused turnovers. Barlage led Newberry with six draw controls.

The Wolves wrap up the regular season Friday evening against the Coker Cobras with first draw scheduled for 6 p.m.
