CLINTON, S.C. - The Newberry women's tennis team earned an upset victory over Division I Presbyterian at the Templeton Tennis Courts on Wednesday, knocking off their longtime rivals by a score of 4-3.

Playing with Division I scoring rules, Newberry (12-6) took the doubles point from Presbyterian (8-13-1), despite a loss at No. 2 doubles.

The Wolves' No. 3 pair of sophomore Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) and freshman Kelly McManus (Charleston, S.C.) took an 8-2 decision from Lucia Leahy and Antonia Conze.

The key victory in doubles play came at No. 1 as the Wolves senior pairing of Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) were forced to a tiebreaker against Patricia Alves and Kayla Stanford.

The Blue Hose's number one duo kept themselves in the tiebreak set, but Newberry's Ecuadorian's earned a victory and the doubles point for the Wolves.

Singles play saw Newberry losses at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4, with Adum's loss at No. 2 coming in three sets.

Sophomore Vanessa Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) delivered a point in singles play in three sets. Ortiz fell behind a set to Caroline deLoach, but bounced back with a pair of victories in the second and third sets.

At No. 5 singles, senior Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) took set one from Stanford. The Blue Hose's No. 5 picked up a set two victory, before Ziehe won in the third and decisive set.

In the end, it came down to No. 6 singles and the lone freshman in the Wolves' lineup. McManus took a tight 7-6 set one victory, before dropping a similarly close 7-5 decision in the second set to Conze. The tiebreaker set turned the Wolves way as McManus pushed ahead with a 6-2 third set victory.

Newberry returns to conference play on Friday in Charlotte against Queens, with a scheduled first serve of 1 p.m. against the Royals.
