Wolves take two from Cobras to earn series sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HARTSVILLE - The Newberry Wolves took both ends of Saturday's South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with the Coker Cobras to earn a series sweep after 6-3 and 5-3 wins at Tom J. New Field.

With the sweep, the Wolves are now 24-21 overall and 14-13 in SAC play entering the final week of the regular season. Newberry hosts Pfeiffer on Tuesday and plays at USC Aiken on Wednesday before closing the regular season with a three-game series at Anderson on Friday and Saturday. Coker falls to 20-20 overall and 9-17 in the league, eliminated from conference tournament contention.

Ryan Cranmer (Newport, N.C.) was fantastic at the plate, going 6-for-8 on the day with a homer, two doubles and three RBIs.

Game One: Newberry 6, Coker 3
Cole Cromer (North Augusta, S.C.; 4-2) was masterful on the mound, allowing just one unearned run on five hits with six strikeouts and a walk in 8.0 innings to give the Wolves a win in the opening game.

The Wolves opened the scoring with two outs in the top of the fourth, as Cranmer reached base on an error and Causey Stanland (Anderson, S.C.) smacked a single. That was followed by an RBI double from Eric Barbieri (Marlton, N.J.) and a two-run double by Mitchel Griffin (Columbia, S.C.) to make it a 3-0 lead.

Newberry extended the lead to 5-0 in the sixth when Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) singled to lead off the frame and came home when Cranmer blasted his eighth homerun of the season to left-center, no small feat at Coker's massive field. It was only the second homer at Tom J. New in conference play this season.

A pair of errors by the Wolves put a runner on third for the Cobras in the eighth and T.J. Giczkowski's sacrifice fly made it a 5-1 contest.

Jermale Paige (Walterboro, S.C.) got that run back with a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth. Sammy Song brought the Cobras closer with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth, but Daniel Nations (Central, S.C.; 2) came in and got two quick outs for his second save of the season and the Newberry win.

Cranmer, Griffin and Paige all had two hits apiece in the contest.

Game Two: Newberry 5, Coker 3
While the final score was closer, Cranmer's hot bat and a strong complete game from Jake Nidiffer (Columbia, S.C.; 4-2) gave the Wolves the sweep.

Coker scored first in the game on a Will Winslow RBI single in the bottom of the second. Two Newberry batters were hit with one out in the third and Cranmer's RBI double tied the game at 1-1. JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) smacked a two-run double to give the Wolves a 3-1 lead.

The Cobras cut the lead to 3-2 with an unearned run on an RBI groundout by Jarren Donato in the bottom of the third. In the fourth, Paige one again brought a run home with a single, pushing Newberry's lead to two runs again at 4-2.

Song doubled in the fifth for Coker and would score on a wild pitch, bringing the hosts back to an uncomfortable 4-3 score. The Cobras' chances to come back were undone by their infield, as Barbieri reached on an error to lead off the sixth. Pinch runner Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored from there when Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) reached on the pitcher's throwing error.

Nidiffer would not let the Cobras any closer, as he retired the final eight Coker batters in order. He earned his fourth win of the season, allowing three runs - two earned - on three hits with five strikeouts and a walk.

Cranmer went 4-for-4 in the game, while Baur had two hits.
