Wolves blank Cobras in 9-0 SAC victory

NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's tennis team breezed by the Cobras of Coker College on Tuesday at the Cannon Tennis Courts in a 9-0 decision.

The Wolves (11-6, 7-2 SAC) earned three points in doubles play over the Cobras (0-14, 0-9 SAC).

Newberry was led by an 8-2 victory at No. 1 by the No. 10 duo in the Southeast Region, seniors Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador). No. 2 doubles saw sophomore Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) and senior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) blank Faith Baxley and Sarah Elliot 8-0.

Doubles concluded with an 8-2 win by senior Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) and freshman Kelly McManus (Charleston, S.C.) over Rachel Solomon and Adri Watford.

Singles play saw the Wolves sweep the Cobra in six straight-set victories. Aguirre cruised at no. 1 against Jessi Campos, while Adum dropped only one game to Elliot at No. 2.

Sophomore Vanessa Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) dropped just one game as well, as she topped Kyria Borelli at No. 3.

Senior Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) knocked off Baxley at No. 4, while Kelly McManus won in two sets over Solomon.

Newberry's final team point came at No. 6 as Shannon McManus knocked off Watford, without dropping a single game.

The Wolves travel to Charlotte on Friday for a 2 p.m. first serve against the Queens Royals.
