Wolves use doubles points to top Catawba 6-3

SALISBURY, N.C. - The Newberry women's tennis team picked up its sixth victory of South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday at the Johnson Tennis Center as the Wolves topped Catawba 6-3.

The Wolves (10-5, 6-1 SAC) opened the team scoring against the Lady Indians (10-11, 2-5 SAC) with a trio of doubles victories.

Sophomore Vanessa Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and senior Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) topped Maddy Henderson and Lauren Sledd 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. The score was similar at No. 1 as seniors Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) edged Liz Renteria and Sloan Kessler by a score of 8-4.

The final doubles win came at No. 3 as sophomore Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) and senior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) won 8-6 against Alli Prior and Olivia Myers.

Singles play saw the two teams split the six points and matches.

Adum took down Kessler In straight sets at No. 2, while Ortiz did the same to Henderson at No. 3.

The lone three-set victory for the Wolves came at No. 4 as Strong took the first and third sets from Sledd.

Newberry next plays on Sunday as the Tusculum Pioneers come to the Cannon Tennis Courts for a noon South Atlantic Conference match.
