Wolves' offense held quiet in 3-0 loss to Wingate in series opener

Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves' offense was stymied in the series opener against Wingate, as the Bulldogs' starter threw a complete game one-hitter to give Wingate a 3-0 win at the Smith Road Complex on Friday night.

Newberry falls to 16-13 overall and 8-8 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Wingate is now 19-7 overall and 13-5 in the league. The teams will meet up for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Newberry starter Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) didn't allow a run until the fourth inning, when Wingate stretched four singles and an error into two runs.

The Wolves' first baserunner came in the bottom of the third when Trey Scott (Springhill, Fla.) reached on an error and was stranded there. A pair of tough defensive catches in the outfield kept WU starter Olen Little's no-hit bid alive.

JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) led off the bottom of the eighth with a single through the right side, but was caught stealing just one pitch later. Wingate's Brad Cherry hit a double in the top of the ninth and scored on a Bill Krebs single for an insurance run.

Camp fell to 7-2 on the season, scattering 10 hits in 8.1 innings with six strikeouts and only one walk. Little moved his record to 7-0 on the season with one hit, three strikeouts and no walks. He induced 15 fly ball outs and eight groundouts on 109 pitches.
