NEWBERRY - Senior Susana Aguirre picked up Newberry's lone singles point, while sophomore Vanessa Ortiz and senior Marina Ziehe did the same in doubles play, as the Wolves fell 7-2 at the Cannon Tennis Courts to the visiting Lander Bearcats.
The No. 6 team in the Southeast Region - Lander (9-3) took a 2-1 lead over the Wolves (9-5) at the conclusion of doubles play. The Wolves' single point in doubles action came at No. 2 as Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) took an 8-2 decision over Renata Mello and Marion Courbis.
A frantic comeback at No. 3 doubles by sophomore Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) and senior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) fell short as the Wolves' duo fell 9-8 to Tiffany Vanhpraseuth and Alyssa Savill.
Singles play proved tough for Newberry as Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) earned the Wolves' second team point with a straight sets victory over Courbis.
Ortiz was the only Newberry player to reach three sets as she battled from down a set, before falling to Ivanka Mocic at No. 3.
The Wolves return to South Atlantic Conference action on Sunday with a noon start at Queens.
