NEWBERRY - The Wolves' women were nearly perfect as Newberry topped Brevard 8-1 at the Cannon Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon.
The No. 10 team in the Southeast Region, Newberry (8-4, 4-1 SAC), won easily at No. 2 doubles as senior Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) and sophomore Vanessa Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) earned an 8-0 win over Claudia Hellman and Nirvana Silva. Another straightforward victory came at No. 3 doubles as the McManus sisters, senior Shannon (Charleston, S.C.) and freshman Kelly (Charleston, S.C.) toppled Jule Hermann and Ana Drummond 8-3.
The toughest match in doubles came at No. 1 where seniors Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) edged Michelle Prata and Katie Daugherty 9-7.
Singles play saw five victories by the Wolves in straight sets, with Adum leading the way at No. 2. Ortiz and sophomore Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) picked up two-set victories at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
Senior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) topped Silva at No. 5, while Ziehe did not lose a single game as she topped Drummond at No. 6.
The Wolves return to the Cannon Tennis Courts next Tuesday with a 2 p.m. scheduled first serve against Lincoln Memorial.
