Newberry stops Crusaders in 8-1 victory

NEWBERRY - Sophomore Vanessa Ortiz continued her strong debut season at Newberry as she helped lead the Wolves to an 8-1 victory over the Belmont Abbey Crusaders at the Cannon Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon.

The Wolves (4-2) controlled doubles play as the team dropped only two games to the Crusaders (0-2) across all of doubles play.

No. 1 and No. 3 doubles saw 8-0 victories for Newberry pairs as seniors Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil) won at No. 1, while freshman Kelly McManus (Charleston, S.C.) and senior Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) picked up a victory at No. 3.

The duo of senior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) and sophomore Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) topped Brooke Ingram and Bridget Franer 8-2 at No. 2.

Singles play saw the Wolves win five matches in straight sets, with the only loss coming at No. 3 as the Wolves conceded the individual match by retirement. No. 1 saw Aguirre cruise to victory, while senior Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) did the same at No. 4.

The McManus sisters earned straight sets wins as Kelly topped Paige French at No. 5, while Shannon toppled Brigid Donohue at No. 6. The Wolves closest singles result came at No. 2, where Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) picked up her eighth win of the season with a two-set victory over Lydia Schellenberg.
