Wolves earn big 7-2 victory over Anderson

ANDERSON - With a dominant outing in singles action, the Newberry women's tennis team earned a decisive 7-2 victory over the Anderson Trojans on Saturday at the Max Grubbs Memorial Courts.

Newberry (3-2, 1-0 SAC) held a 2-1 advantage over the No. 10 team in the Southeast Region after doubles play as Anderson (0-1, 0-1 SAC) was only able to pull out one victory in doubles play.

No. 2 doubles saw Newberry senior Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and sophomore Vanessa Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) pick up a tight 8-5 victory over Lindsay Gregory and Rebecca Bruning, while sophomore Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) and senior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) knocked off Alexandra Ebner and Nikkola Wichenko 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.

Singles play saw Newberry drop only one match, as the Wolves earned two victories in straight sets, before picking up a trio of wins in three sets.

No. 1 singles saw senior Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) notch her third straight singles win over Anderson's Avery Owens. Ortiz won a pair of set tiebreakers to top Karen Ching in two sets at No. 2 singles.

No. 4 singles went to three sets, as Lamers defeated Gregory after falling behind a set early in her conference opener.

Strong and Ziehe also needed to come back from a set down to earn three set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

The Trojans had won four straight matches against Newberry before this afternoon's Wolves' victory.

Newberry meets Belmont Abbey tomorrow afternoon at the Cannon Tennis Courts as the Wolves and Crusaders match-up at 1 p.m.
