DUE WEST - The Newberry women's tennis team was unable to breakthrough at the Erskine College Tennis Complex on Thursday afternoon as the No. 44 Flying Fleet topped the Wolves 9-0.
The Wolves (2-2) saw Erskine (2-1) take control during doubles action. The No. 7 team in the Southeast Region picked up 8-4 victories at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. At No. 1 doubles Corin Hallman and Mike Goyette, the No. 7 doubles side in the region, out dueled Newberry's top side as senior's Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) fell 8-6 to Hallman and Goyette.
Hallman, the No. 13 singles player in the region, topped Aguirre at No. 1 in straight sets. Two sets were all that was needed at No. 2 singles as Adum fell to the No. 17 player in the region in Miranda Guthrie.
No. 3 singles saw sophomore Vanessa Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) force a third set, but ultimately it was Mika Goyette of Erksine who would secure the victory. The Wolves' next closest match came at No. 5 as senior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) picked up a win in the second set, before falling in the tie breaker to Haley Elliott.
Newberry is scheduled to open conference play on Saturday at Anderson. The Trojans, ranked No. 10 in the Southeast Region, are set to host the Wolves at 2 p.m.
