NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's tennis team got back on the winning track Wednesday as the Wolves swept Benedict 9-0 at the Cannon Tennis Courts.
The Wolves (2-1) picked up an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles as seniors Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) topped Glory Zhou and Esther Zeyala.
The Tigers (0-1) fell 8-0 at No. 2, where senior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) and sophomore Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) defeated Belinda Camacho and Keneisha Whittington. Due to an incomplete Benedict lineup, the Wolves picked up a forfeit victory at No. 3 doubles, where senior Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) and freshman Kelly McManus (Charleston, S.C.) were credited with the win.
Singles play began with sophomore Vanessa Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) topping Zeyala in straight sets at No. 1. No. 2 singles saw senior Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) defeat Zhou in two sets. Shannon McManus earned a straight sets win over Camacho at No. 3, while her sister Kelly topped Keneisha Whittington 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.
Aguirre and Adum were credited with forfeit victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Newberry heads to Due West tomorrow afternoon for a 3 p.m. match against No. 44 Erskine. The Flying Fleet are ranked No. 7 in the Southeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
