Box Score NEWBERRY - A 23-point effort by senior Tasia Holdorf led the Wolves to a 66-55 victory over No. 24 Wingate inside of Eleazer Arena on Wednesday evening.
Newberry (13-6, 9-6 SAC) and Wingate (15-4, 11-4 SAC) spent much of the opening six minutes feeling out one another, before a jumper by Holdorf (Anchorage, Alaska) set the Wolves off on a seven-point run. Holdorf's jumper was followed by a 3-pointer from junior Zara Pearson (Echuca, Victoria, Australia) and a layup by redshirt sophomore Emily Perry (Nambour, Queensland, Australia).
Perry's layup gave the Wolves a 16-9 lead with 10:03 remaining in the opening period.
The Bulldogs battled back, but saw the Wolves' lead reach eight points with 4:18 left in the first on a jumper from junior Haylee Lepaio (Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia). Newberry held a seven-point advantage with 1:21 left in the period, but four points in the final minute by Wingate cut Newberry's halftime lead to three.
The second period saw Wingate quickly knot the game at 26-26, before taking a lead and running it to as many as four points.
Wingate held its final lead of the game until the 16:37 mark as Holdorf hit a 3-pointer off an assist from junior Kaitlynn Pacholke (Tampa, Fla.). Perry followed Holdorf's three with a jumper to regain the lead for the Wolves at 35-32.
After seeing its lead drop to two, Newberry saw Holdorf hit back-to-back 3-pointers to take the lead to eight. The Wolves lead reached nine points at the 8:58 mark, but soon the score was tied at 44-44 after a Kayla Harris layup for the Bulldogs.
The two sides battled back-and-forth until Newberry regained the lead at 3:40 on a layup by Lepaio. Lepaio's layup put the Wolves ahead of Wingate 50-48. Newberry used Lepaio's make to take off on an 18-7 run over the final 3:40. The Wolves' run saw Newberry's lead reach as many as 13 points before a late layup by Wingate gave Newberry an 11-point victory as time expired.
The Wolves were led on offense by Holdorf's 23 points. Lepaio and Gleeson added 18 and 11, respectively. Lepaio also snagged 15 rebounds to record a double-double on the night.
Gleeson and Holdorf led Newberry with three assists each. Gleeson's three assists moved her ahead of former teammate Jessica Bearzatto at No. 4 all-time at Newberry with 303 career assists.
Newberry hits the road on Saturday for a 6 p.m. scheduled tip-off at Lincoln Memorial.
