Box Score WINGATE, N.C. - A trio of Wolves reached double digits in Newberry's 65-54 loss to Wingate inside of Cuddy Arena on Wednesday evening.
The Wolves (15-10, 11-10 SAC) opened the scoring with back-to-back buckets from senior Tasia Holdorf (Anchorage, Alaska). Newberry's lead extended to five on a 3-pointer by junior Kaitlynn Pacholke (Tampa, Fla.).
Pacholke's triple led to a turnaround by the Bulldogs (20-5, 16-5 SAC) as the home side answered with an 11-2 run to take a 13-9 lead over the Wolves. Newberry cut into the Wingate lead within the final eight minutes of the first period as junior Haylee Lepaio (Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia) hit a jumper, followed by a jumper from Pacholke to tie the game at 17-17.
With 5:55 left in the first half, Holdorf hit a jumper in the paint to give Newberry a 19-17 lead. The two sides exchanged points and reached a tie score five times in the final five minutes, before Sharee Boyd hit a layup with 18 seconds left in the period to give Wingate a 31-29 lead at halftime.
The second-half opened with 3-point makes from Pacholke and junior Zara Pearson (Echuca, Victoria, Australia) to give Newberry a four-point lead out of the half. Wingate answered by tying the game at 35-35. Newberry regained a short lead with 16:56 on a jumper and free throw by Lepaio.
The lead at 16:56 was the final lead of the night for the Wolves as the Bulldogs extended its lead to 16 points, before Newberry cut the lead to 11 before time expired on a 65-54 Wingate victory.
Newberry was led by Lepaio's 17 points and 18 rebounds, while Holdorf grabbed 15 and Pacholke scored a career high 12 points. Lepaio blocked three shots for the Wolves, while Lepaio and Pacholke each dished out three assists.
The Wolves wrap the regular season up on Saturday at 1 p.m. as the Carson-Newman Eagles travel to Eleazer Arena.
