No. 4 Wolves stunned by UNC Pembroke, 18-15

PEMBROKE, N.C. - In one of the biggest upsets of the Division II wrestling season, the UNC Pembroke Braves took six of 10 bouts - including the final two - from the No. 4-ranked Newberry Wolves to win by an 18-15 count in the English E. Jones Center on Tuesday night.

Newberry sees its dual record drop to 17-2, while UNCP is now 12-4 in duals. The Wolves wrap up the regular season Thursday night at 7 p.m. when they host Anderson for Senior Night.

No. 7 Jeff Vesta (Manhattan, Kan.) started the dual in the right direction with a 5-0 decision over Dontae Brown at 125 lbs. and the Wolves held on to a lead in the team score despite a loss at 133 lbs. thanks to the deduction of a team point from the Braves for a loss of mat control.

No. 3 B.J. Young (Jackson, N.J.) added to his win total over rival and sixth-ranked Daniel Ownbey with an 11-7 decision to put Newberry up 6-2, but UNCP won decisions at 149 and 157 to go up 8-6 at the halftime break.

Blake Ridenour (Maryville, Tenn.) put the Wolves back up by a 9-8 score with a shutout decision at 165 lbs., but UNCP's Blaze Shade picked up the first bonus points of the dual with a major decision at 174 lbs., giving the hosts a 12-9 advantage.

Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) stole the momentum back with a pin at the 4:20 mark of the 184 lbs. bout, putting the scarlet and gray back on top at 15-12. UNCP's Stuart Nadeau earned an 8-5 decision at 197 lbs. to set up the winner-take-all bout at heavyweight. Newberry's No. 2 Matt Wade (Easton, Md.) earned the first point with an escape before Nadeau was awarded a controversial point for a technical violation. Nadeau earned the escape on his choice and picked up a late takedown to seal the Braves' win.

Newberry loses to UNC Pembroke for the first time as an NCAA team (since 2005-06) and first time since the inaugural season of 2004-05. It is also Newberry's first loss against a current regional opponent since an 18-13 loss to Ashland in the December 2007 Newberry Duals.
