DAHLONEGA, Ga. - Senior Marina Ziehe picked up Newberry's lone singles victory as the Wolves fell 6-3 to the North Georgia Nighthawks at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Newberry (5-3) led the Nighthawks (3-1) after doubles play as senior duo Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) topped Cameron Williams and Adalyn Hazelman 8-2 at No. 1. The No. 2 doubles match saw sophomore Vanessa Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) edge the No. 5 team in the Southeast Region 8-5, as the Newberry duo defeated Mathilde Baartvedt and Natalia Escobar.
Ziehe earned a decisive victory as she took a pair of 6-2 sets from Alexis Lee.
The Wolves took two singles matches into a third set as Ortiz fell at No. 3 and senior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) fell at No. 5.
Newberry returns home to the Cannon Tennis Courts on Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. South Atlantic Conference match against Carson-Newman.
