Wolves stymie Valkyries in 9-0 victory

NEWBERRY - For the third time in the 2014 spring tennis season, the Newberry women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 sweep of an opponent as the Wolves toppled Converse at Newberry High School on Sunday afternoon.

The Wolves (5-2) coasted through doubles play, earning three victories over the Valkyries (0-2) including an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles by senior Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) and sophomore Vanessa Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia). Newberry's No. 1 pairing of seniors Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) picked up an 8-4 win over Marisa Esformes and Claudia Gunn.

No. 3 doubles saw freshman Kelly McManus (Charleston, S.C.) and senior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) pick up an 8-4 win over Klaire Rouse and Tanishia Thomas.

Aguirre dropped only three games as she topped Gunn at No. 1 singles, while Adum matched doubles partner by winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles over Esformes.

Ortiz won in straight sets at No. 3 over Kelsey Rembert, while Ziehe also won in two sets over Rouse.

Newberry's biggest victories came at No. 4 and No. 6 singles where sophomore Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) and senior Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) won 12-straight games to top Samantha Sheffield and Laura Morales, respectively.

The Wolves' schedule continues on Tuesday with a road trip to North Georgia. The Wolves and Nighthawks are set to get underway at 2 p.m.
