Wolves slay Crusaders 9-0 in season opener

NEWBERRY - In the first match of the 2014 spring season, the Newberry women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory against the visiting North Greenville Crusaders as the Wolves dropped only one set on the morning.

The Wolves (1-0) swept the Crusaders (0-1) in doubles action to start off the morning at the Cannon Tennis Courts. At No. 3 doubles the tandem of senior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) and sophomore Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) cruised to an 8-2 victory over Christina Kiessling and Aline Ribeiro.

An 8-2 score line was also present at No. 2 doubles as senior Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and sophomore Vanessa Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) toppled Rebecca Beacham and Victoria Gomez. The tightest match of the morning in doubles came at No. 1 as Newberry's first team all-conference duo of seniors Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) edged Susane Lenz and Maggie Elliot 8-4.

Singles action saw strong outings up and down the lineup for the Wolves as five of Newberry's single positions secured straight set victories.

Adum opened 2014 at the No. 1 position and topped Lenz 6-4, 6-0. A first team all-conference singles player, Aguirre, notched a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Elliot. In her first match at the Cannon Tennis Courts, Ortiz defeated Ribeiro 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3.

The No. 4 position saw Lamers ease to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Beacham, while Ziehe notched a 6-1, 6-3 win over Gomez at No. 6. The only match to reach three sets saw Strong defeat Kiessling 6-2, 5-7, 10-6.

Newberry gets a short rest as the Wolves travel to Conway for a match against Division I opponent Coastal Carolina at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. The Wolves return to the Cannon Tennis Courts on Wednesday at 2 p.m. against Benedict.
