Box Score NEWBERRY – Newberry was able to snap a three game losing skid as they knocked off nonconference foe Francis Marion on Saturday night, 56-40.
The Wolves (6-3, 3-1) were led by senior forward Haylee Lepaio (Bathurst, NSW, Australia) who had her third double-double of the season as she posted 18 points and 13 rebounds. She also recorded a block that moved her into second place all-time on the career blocks list with 116. Samantha Creed (Montmorency, Vic, Australia) also had 14 points and eight rebounds.
The Patriots (2-6) jumped out to a 12-5 lead early but a 7-0 run sparked by a pair of Jaya Schultz (Santa Clarita, Calif.) baskets and spanned three minutes. The teams traded baskets until Francis Marion had a 5-0 run and took a 23-17 lead into the locker room.
The Wolves came out a different team after the break as they outscored the Patriots 39-17 in the second frame. Trailing 28-21 with 17:09 left in the game, Newberry went on a 16-3 run spanning just over seven minutes to put them up 37-30 and put them up for good.
From there, Newberry was on cruise control. The Wolves had 14 points off of turnovers in the second half. For the game, Newberry shot 37.7 percent from the field and 20 percent from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Patriots 40-30.
Newberry will be back to South Atlantic Conference play on Monday night at 6 p.m. on the road at Lincoln Memorial.
