Box Score NEWBERRY – The Newberry College Wolves picked up another big South Atlantic Conference win Saturday afternoon in Eleazer Arena. The Wolves clinched a spot in the South Atlantic Conference tournament with a 3-1 victory over the Catawba College Indians.
Newberry picked up right where they left off last night, recording match highs in kills, hitting percentage, service aces, digs and team blocks.
The first set was too close for comfort, as the Wolves dropped a commanding 24-20 lead to a 24-all tie. After going down 25-24, the Wolves scored three straight points to take a 27-25 victory.
In the second stanza the Wolves came back from a 17-11 to tie it up at 22. Newberry moved on to take a 2-0 lead in the match after scoring three of the next four points.
The third set woes for Newberry were evident yet again, as the Wolves found themselves at an early disadvantage at 11-3. However, they did not give up. Newberry fought back to for a tie at 22, but a couple of costly errors allowed the Indians to sneak away with a set.
Newberry played nothing short of fantastic in the final frame, as they hit .458 for the stanza with five service aces. After the Wolves jumped out to an early 10-2 lead, the Indians pushed the score to 13-7. Newberry responded with an eight point run that included four service aces in a row from junior setter Rachel Moran. The Wolves took the set in dominant fashion (25-11) to take the match and improve to 14-13 on the year and 8-11 in South Atlantic Conference play. Catawba dropped to 6-20 and 4-16 in conference play.
Senior Jessica King played outstanding, demolishing 13 kills and hitting .500 for the match. Fellow senior Amanda Soper tallied eight kills while Holly Brisson and Lauren Prachar each added seven of their own. Prachar added 11 digs while Elayni Stokes totaled 16 pickups and sophomore Logan Hayward paced the defensive effort with 17 of her own. Moran put up a season high seven service aces in the match, only five off of the record set by Newberry’s Amanda Van Pelt in 2003, while handing out 26 assists.
Newberry will host their final home game of the season Tuesday night when they play the Anderson Trojans at 7 p.m.
