Box Score NEWBERRY – Newberry field hockey battled in wet, windy and cold conditions inside Setzler Field on Saturday afternoon but came up short to the Sewanee Tigers 4-3.
Meghan Smiga (Annandale, Va.) Kaitlyn Willard (Stevensville, Md.) and Kaycie Andrew (Lehighton, Pa.) all tallied goals on the day for the Wolves.
Newberry (4-11, 0-5) got on the board 93 seconds into the match as Andrew scored her eighth goal of the season. Following a scramble in front of the cage Andrew had the ball on her weak side and slotted it past goalie Gabrielle Fignar.
The Tigers equalized in the 25th minute as Carrie Anderson found the ball at the end of her stick with a yawning cage as Dakota Elzy came out to make a save the previous shot.
With less than a minute left in the half the Tigers’ Emma Horgan found the back of the cage for her third goal of the season to give Sewanee a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
11 minutes into the second half Willard capitalized on her penalty stroke opportunity to draw even with the Tigers at two goals each.
Two and a half minutes later the Tigers regained their one goal lead as Anderson found the ball at the end of her stick and capitalized on the opportunity.
Sewanee added to their lead in the 55th minute as Virginia Barry’s shot went through Elzy’s legs and trickled into the back of the cage.
Newberry closed the gap to one in the 56th minute mark as Smiga found the back of the cage for the Wolves. The Scarlet and Gray had multiple opportunities to tie the match but the Tigers defense prevented any more scoring.
Newberry closes the regular season on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. as they host conference foe Limestone.
