THE BREVARD SERIES
• This game is the ninth meeting between Newberry and the Tornados.
• Newberry has a 7-1 lead in the all-time series.
• The Tornados did not score a touchdown in the first five meetings between the two schools.
• Newberry trailed 21-20 in the fourth quarter of last year’s game but won a 28-21 decision on the strength of three touchdown catches and a 2-point conversion by Corey Washington.
THE COACHES
NEWBERRY: Todd Knight (Gardner-Webb, 1989) is in his sixth season as Newberry’s head coach. He has a 31-30 record and a record of 5-4 against teams ranked in the AFCA Divsion II Top 25. He has a 19-20 record against the South Atlantic Conference. In 2009, Knight led Newberry to a 6-4 record and became the first Newberry head coach to record a winning record in his inaugural season since Reed Charpia in 1978. In 2010, Knight led Newberry to a 4-6 record, as well as the 2011 season. The Wolves went 5-6 overall in the 2012 season and achieved a ranking as high as No. 25 nationally. In 2013, he led the Wolves to a 9-3 overall record, making the school’s second appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs. Newberry finished the season ranked No. 23 nationally. Knight is 4-1 all-time against Brevard.
BREVARD: Paul Hamilton (Appalachian State, 1981) is in his 16th season as a collegiate head coach and eighth as the head coach of the Tornados. He has a 67-119 (.361) overall record. He has a 1-6 record against Newberry.
UP NEXT: CARSON-NEWMAN
• Newberry returns home next weekend for its final home game of the 2014 campaign, hosting the nationally ranked Carson-Newman Eagles.
• Following last year’s two meetings in 15 days, Carson-Newman leads the all-time series 30-19. This will be the 50th all-time meeting.
• The Wolves have won three of the last four meetings in the series at Setzler Field.
• The day will see the seniors of the football and cheerleading teams and the Scarlet Poms honored prior to the game, as it is Senior Day.
• With the game being the Wolves’ closest home game to Veterans’ Day, it is also Military Appreciation Day.
• The final promotion of this game is Church Day, with Rev. Ernie Worman distributing information on that promotion to nearby churches.

ROLL OVER THE ODOMETER
• Newberry quarterback W.T. Murden became just the fourth trigger man in school history to pass for over 5,000 yards in a career with his 174 yards at CSU.
• He now has 6,026 yards passing, just the second Newberry quarterback to eclipse 6,000 yards in his career.
• He ranks second in in TD passes, yardage, completions and attempts.

HOMETOWN SCORER
• Jackson Swindler scored Newberry’s first touchdown of the season with his 62-yard score in the fourth quarter of the CSU game.
• He is the first player who is a native of Newberry to score a touchdown for Newberry College since Roderick Elkins returned an interception for the game winning touchdown at West Virginia Wesleyan on Sept. 23, 2000.

ELMORE HITS A THOUSAND• With three carries in the third quarter of the Limestone game, Newberry senior Dureal Elmore from Abbeville earned over 1,000 rushing yards for his career.
• With one more rushing touchdown, Elmore would crack Newberry’s top 10 in career rushing scores. He currently has 12 touchdowns after his first quarter score against Tusculum.
NEWBERRY IN THE NFL• Three former Newberry College football players are on NFL rosters.
• As expected, Kansas City cornerback Ron Parker made the Chiefs’ roster for the second straight season opener. He started the KC’s last three games at safety in the place of injured Pro Bowler Eric Berry.
• Parker was a standout in the Chiefs’ win over St. Louis last week, notching four tackles with a sack and an interception with a return of 10 yards.
• Despite an injury late in the preseason, Brandon Bostick remained on the active roster for the Green Bay Packers. He made his 2014 debut in GB’s win over the Jets, playing on nine special teams plays. He had a reception in the Pack’s win over Carolina.
• The feel-good story of the NFL this preseason was wide receiver Corey Washington, who caught four touchdown passes late in games for the New York Giants. In the regular season, he has yet to catch a pass, but has been fature in short field packages as well as special teams.
• These players tie Newberry for the second-most NFL players of any Division II school, behind only Grand Valley State with five. A trio of other Division II schools also have three NFL players – Saginaw Valley State, Washburn and West Texas A&M.
• Newberry’s three NFL players is all the more impressive considering its relatively small student body. Only one player in the NFL hails from a college smaller than Newberry - Baltimore Ravens’ wide receiver Jacoby Jones, who attended Lane College in Tennessee. Lane lists its attendance as 1,000.

• His efforts in the Wingate game were rewarded with SAC Player of the Week honors, and he currently ranks ninth in the nation and first in the SAC and Super Region II in punt return average.

ON THIS DAY IN NEWBERRY FOOTBALL (7-5)
• 1913 - Newberry plays its first true road game and is handed the first loss in program history in a 32-0 shutout at Davidson.
• 1924 - The Indians pick up thier fifth straight win with a 10-0 road win over the Blue Hose of Presbyterian in Clinton.
• 1929 - Newberry’s only touchdown on the day came on a pass from Hutchinson to Gates in a 40-6 loss to Erskine in Due West.
• 1947 - The Indians squeak by Wofford in Spartanburg with a 13-6 win.
• 1952 - Newberry can’t handle its Lutheran rivals, dropping a 40-7 contest to Lenoir-Rhyne at home.
• 1969 - Newberry loses at Guilford in Greensboro, BUT the game is later awarded to Newberry via forfeit.
• 1975 - The Indians put up 353 rushing yards, as Newberry defeats the Tigers of Savannah State on the road by a 26-13 count.
• 1980 - Newberry jumped out to a 21-0 first half lead and held off a Savannah State comeback for a 28-26 homecoming win, snapping a four-game losing streak.
• 1986 - The Indians concede a late touchdown to Catawba and lose a 16-13 game in Salisbury.
• 1997 - Newberry falls at Catawba by a 36-17 score in the Indians’ last home game of the season.
• 2003 - Mazzie Drummond goes off for a ridiculous 479 yards of offense (337 passing, 142 rushing), capping a 32-31 home win over Wingate with a 1-yard touchdown carry with 7 seconds remaining
• 2008 - Newberry scored 38 straight points with two Kelton Tindal touchdown receptions for a 38-14 home Bishops Trophy win over Lenoir-Rhyne.
