Wolves suffer setback against Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Newberry Wolves dropped three straight sets to the Mars Hill Lions Friday night to drop their record to 10-11 overall and 4-9 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Lions improve to 7-13 and 6-7 in the conference.

The Wolves played hard in the first set, but saw their efforts come up just short as the Lions prevailed 27-25. After sporting a 13-8 lead, the Lions started to claw their way back into the set, pushing the score to 19-all. Newberry pulled ahead 24-20, but saw Mars Hill come back to 24-24 and then eventually take the frame with the next two points.

The second set was all Mars Hill as the Lions pushed an early 15-8 to score 10 of the final 14 points to take the stanza. The third set showed heart from the Wolves and they carried a 16-15 lead, but dropped 10 of the last 12 points for the Lions to take the sweep.

Sophomore Logan Hayward totaled seven kills while seniors Amanda Soper and Wendy Davis added six kills apiece. Junior Rachel Moran handed out 27 assists. Elayni Stokes picked up 19 digs and Lauren Prachar picked up 12 of her own to pace the defense.

The Wolves travel to Greeneville tomorrow to take on the Tusculum Pioneers at noon.
