The Wolves came out hot against the Eagles, taking the first set decisively 25-20 to a Carson-Newman team that had only give up six sets in South Atlantic Conference play, three of which game in a 3-0 loss to No. 9 Wingate. The Wolves hit .150 in the set while holding the Eagles to a .000 clip.
The second and third sets were mirror images with the Wolves getting plagued with errors. Newberry would end up with more miscues than kills in the two sets to hit negative. Carson-Newman would take the frames 25-16 and 25-18.
However, Newberry was revived with some life and came storming back in the fourth set. The offense was revitalized as well, connecting for 16 kills and totaling an astounding .414 percentage. The defense showed up as well, contributing 14 digs and two of the teams five blocks on the day. The Wolves took the set 25-22.
The fifth was close until after a 7-7 draw the Eagles would go on 4-0 run to take the lead 11-7. Carson-Newman needed only those four points, as they would score the final four points while allowing the Wolves to score only two more times in the stanza.
Jessica King had another incredible match, blasting 13 kills while carrying a .435 hitting percentage. Amanda Soper tagged her first double-double of the year with 12 kills and 13 digs. Rachel Moran dished out 40 assists, while hitting .333 with seven terminations. Kayla Anderson and Elayni Stokes picked up 30 of the Wolves 73 digs, 16 and 14, respectively.
The Wolves will look to get back on track Tuesday when they host the Brevard College Tornados in Eleazer Arena at 7 p.m.
