No. 4 Wolves cruise to 53-0 win over Coker

NEWBERRY - The No. 4 Newberry Wolves started the 2014 calendar year with a convincing 53-0 win over the Coker Cobras in Eleazer Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Newberry moves to 7-0 on the season and next wrestles at Minnesota State-Mankato on Wednesday night.

The Wolves earned bonus points in nine of the 10 matches and did not concede an offensive point after Nick Lankford (Braselton, Ga.) started the dual at 133 lbs. with a win by forfeit.

No. 5 B.J. Young (Jackson, N.J.) earned a 15-0 technical fall over Rashad Cunningham at 141 lbs. and Seiji Borja (Charleston, S.C.) followed that up with a 17-1 technical fall over Kevin Thompson at 149 lbs. Kayne Melko (Bellaire, Ohio) took a 10-1 major decision over J.D. Dykes at 157 lbs.

No. 7 Blake Ridenour (Maryville, Tenn.) started a run of pins for the Wolves at 165 lbs. at the 1:16 mark over Phillip Burrows. Joe Pittman (Forsyth, Ga.) pinned Zach Dicus at the 2:07 mark of the 174 lbs. bout and Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) pinned Jacob Ralph at the 2:03 mark of the 184 lbs. match.

After Braden Carter (Christiansburg, Va.) pinned Robert Parland at the 1:11 mark of the 197 lbs. bout, No. 5 Matt Wade (Easton, Md.) faced the toughest competition of the dual and earned a 7-4 decision over Austin Akins in the heavyweight match.

No. 3 Jeff Vesta (Manhattan, Kan.) closed out the dual just 43 seconds into the 125 lbs. match with a pin over Gavin Perkins.

Coker (4-2) is coached by Cy Wainwright, who was an undefeated national champion at Newberry.
