Wolves take 3-1 decision from host Patriots

FLORENCE- The Newberry Wolves moved to 3-0 on the season Saturday morning with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 25-17) win over the homestanding Francis Marion Patriots in the morning session of the FMU Invitational.

Newberry will look for its second straight undefeated FMU Invitational at 7 p.m. tonight when the Wolves play Mount Olive.

Efficient hitting from the scarlet and gray earned the win, with five attackers hitting over .250 on the way to a .269 team hitting percentage. Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) hit .368 with 11 kills and four blocks, Logan Hayward (Sylvania, Ohio) hit .345 with 12 kills and three blocks and Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) hit .286 with 17 kills, 12 digs and four blocks.

Setter Rachel Moran (Cypress, Texas) passed out 49 assists on Newberry's 55 kills and libero Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) earned 12 digs to tie Parrish for the team lead.

In a tightly contested first set, neither side ever led by more than two points. Francis Marion had a 22-20 lead, but the Wolves powered to a set win by scoring five of the last six points, none of which came on FMU errors. Newberry hit .256 in the set.

The Wolves were even stronger offensively in the second set with a .400 hitting percentage. After a 15-all tie, Newberry scored five consecutive points with four blocks to pull away and go up by two sets to none.

FMU rallied to win the third set, with the Wolves hitting a match low .175, but Newberry responded well to cruise to a fourth set win. Newberry went up by five points early, but FMU crawled back to within three at 13-10. The Wolves then scored eight of the next 10 points to get within four points of closing out the match at 21-12. The scarlet and gray scored four of the final six points, with a dump kill by Moran closing out the win.
