Wolves fall 2-1 to Catawba despite Naranjo strike

Box Score

NEWBERRY - An early second half goal by junior Breanna Naranjo was not enough for the Newberry women's soccer team to dig out from a two-goal deficit in the Wolves 2-1 loss to the Catawba Lady Indians on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves (4-3-0, 2-2-0 SAC) saw the Lady Indians (3-4-1, 1-2-1 SAC) jump out on the attack early as Newberry sophomore Rebecca Darley (Wolcott, Conn.) was forced to make a pair of saves in the opening 16 minutes. The initial damage was done shortly after Darley's second save as the Lady Indians earned a corner kick in the 20th minute.

After a short corner by Catawba, Anna Toole sent a lofted pass into the penalty area that was headed into the back of the net by Amy Iwanicki for the first goal of the afternoon. The following Catawba corner also spelled trouble for Newberry as Catawba was granted an own goal by the Wolves, for what would be the game winner in the 26th minute.

Newberry threatened to climb back into the match in the 27th minute when junior Amber Sanchez (Tujunga, Calif.) saw a header saved by Catawba's Angelica Pawlowski. The Wolves saw one more chance on goal at the end of the first half as senior Ashley Reetz's (Charleston, S.C.) left footed strike was turned away by Pawlowski.

The second period saw Naranjo (Oxnard, Calif.) and the Wolves on the attack, as the junior forced Pawlowski's hand in the 51st minute. It wasn't until the 59th minute that Naranjo was able to get the better of Pawlowski.

It was in the 59th minute that junior Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) delivered a short crisp pass in front of the goal mouth, which was tapped in by Naranjo.

The Wolves were unable to capitalize on the momentum gained by Naranjo's third goal of the season as the Lady Indians managed to control possession much of the final half hour of the match.

Darley posted six saves on the afternoon, while Naranjo placed four shots on frame during the loss. Brodie's assist was her fifth of the season, giving her 40 points in her career and placing her two shy of Jami Schliesman in the Newberry record book.

The Wolves head out of conference on October 3, as the Wolves host Valdosta State at 3 p.m.
