Wolves drop 3-1 decision to LMU

Box Score

NEWBERRY - Despite another outstanding offensive performance from Jessica King, the Newberry Wolves were handed only their second loss of the season, as the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters emerged from Eleazer Arena with a 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-12, 25-22) win on Saturday afternoon.

Newberry is now 7-2 overall and 2-2 in South Atlantic Conference play, while LMU is 6-5 and 2-1 in the league. Newberry's next action comes in conference matches at Brevard and Lenoir-Rhyne next week.

King (Los Angeles, Calif.) added another match to her string of red-hot performances, with 13 kills and no errors for a .619 hitting percentage. She also chipped in on three blocks. In three matches this week, King hit .514 with 42 kills and only five errors.

Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) hit .186 with 19 kills and 18 digs, while Logan Hayward (Sylvania, Ohio) had 10 kills and 12 digs. Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) had 19 digs to lead five Wolves in double digits in that category and Chelsea Mayor (Sugar Land, Texas) passed out 40 assists.

For LMU, Kaitlin Walton had 14 kills and four aces, while Kendra Gephart had 10 kills. Libero Casey Mense had 22 digs.

"It's disappointing when you're at home and have an oppotunity to have a 2-0 weekend and then you don't make it happen, but we had 39 unforced errors and they had 13 or 14, which is a complete set worth of points and a recipe for a loss," said head coach Todd Hay. "I'm really proud that Jessica King had another great day, but we've got to do a better job of controlling the first contact so that our offense can run the way it's built to run."

The first set was tightly played, but it was a late Railsplitter run that gave the guests the opening frame. Newberry had a 13-11 lead, but three straight errors by the Wolves flipped the lead and LMU forced a Newberry timeout at 17-14. Newberry scratched its way to within two points twice at 21-19 and 24-22, but LMU's Brooke Fleeman put away the set with a kill. LMU hit .238 in the set, while Newberry was held to a .150 percentage. Parrish had seven kills in the set, while Hayward, King and Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) each had three kills.

The second set was just as close, with Newberry needing a late surge to close out the set. Two straight blocks from LMU gave the visitors the largest lead of the set at three points at 17-14, but Newberry came back to tie it up by 19-all. After a 22-all tie, a kill from Parrish and a pair of kills from Hayward gave the Wolves the second set. Newberry had 16 kills in the set with a .200 percentage, led by four kills each from Parrish and King.

Newberry couldn't seem to stop a long LMU run in the third set, as the Railsplitters started off with four straight points and then rocketed off after Newberry cut the lead to 6-4. LMU scored 12 consecutive points, with only three coming on LMU kills. Newberry was unable to recover in the set, as the Wolves were limited to a .000 hitting rate, while LMU hit .217, had five aces and put up three blocks.

The Wolves raced out to an early lead in the fourth set, going up 10-4 on a Parrish solo block. However, LMU responded with a surge of its own, tying the set up at 13-all and setting up another tightly played frame. Newberry had a 20-19 lead, but two straight LMU points forced a timeout. Two more Railsplitter points came on Newberry miscues and the guests needed just two more kills to earn the win. Newberry hit .194 in the set and LMU hit .205 with each team committing seven hitting errors as the Wolves put up five blocks. King had five errorless kills in the set.
