HARTSVILLE - The Newberry Wolves picked up their first South Atlantic Conference victory of the 2013 season with a 3-1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-11, 25-12) win over the Coker Cobras at the Timberlake-Lawton Gym on Saturday afternoon.
Newberry moves to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in SAC play. After visiting Lander next Tuesday, the Wolves will finally open their home schedule on Friday and Saturday, hosting Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial in Eleazer Arena.
Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) led the Wolves' attack with 13 kills, while Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 10 kills with a .571 hitting percentage and four blocks. Logan Hayward (Sylvania, Ohio) had nine kills and 12 digs with three blocks, while Rachel Moran (Cypress, Texas) passed out 35 assists.
Newberry had a sizeable advantage on offense with a .252 percentage compared to the Cobras' .033 rate. The Wolves were also extremely strong at the net with 10 blocks compared to Coker's two.
After the Cobras scored the match's opening three points, the Wolves rolled, scoring 19 of the next 25 points to take a 19-9 lead. Newberry cruised to the 25-14 set win thanks to a .357 hitting percentage in the set.
Newberry struggled in the second set, as from a 5-all tie, 16 of Coker's remaining 20 points came on a variety of Newberry errors. The hosts' 25-22 set win evened the match up.
The third set was tight early, but the Wolves turned up the heat and left the Cobras in the dust after scoring 11 of 12 points to push the set lead to 15-6. Coker was barely able to get double digit points in the set, and a Hayward kill put away a 25-11 set win.
The fourth set was all Newberry from the beginning, as the Wolves were quickly up by an 11-5 margin with four service aces. By the time Coker hit its 10th point, Newberry was already up by seven at 17-10. The Wolves closed out the match strong, scoring eight of the final 10 points.
