Adum wins eighth straight conference match in Wolves' 7-2 loss to Pioneers

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Despite falling 7-2 to the Tusculum Pioneers on Sunday afternoon, the Newberry women's tennis team secured its first winning conference season since the 2006-07 season as the Wolves finished conference play 5-4.

Tusculum (14-3, 6-1 SAC) proved its place atop the South Atlantic Conference standings as it swept the Wolves (12-9, 5-4 SAC) in doubles play.

Singles play did not see Newberry fare much better, as the Pioneers snagged four team points from the Wolves. Newberry's victories came atop the singles lineup at No. 1 and No. 2.

At No. 1 singles, junior Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) cruised to a first set win over Kate Hutchinson, before edging Hutchinson in a tight second set for her sixth conference victory in 2013. Aguirre wraps up conference play with a 14-7 overall record and 6-3 record in SAC action.

No. 2 singles saw junior Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) win her eighth straight conference match as she topped Taylor Patterson in straight sets. Adum has not fallen in a SAC match since the Wolves' conference opener to Anderson.

Newberry has clinched a spot in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament for the first time since the 2007-08 season. With the men's teams qualification for the tournament the women will play alongside the men in the conference tournament since the tournament was restructured to require qualification.

The Wolves preparation for the SAC Tournament continues on Wednesday as Newberry hosts North Georgia at 2 p.m.
